First of all… thank you for loving me.

My family knows that when you want to kiss, cuddle or touch me, it comes from a place of love.

But while I'm still little, my immune system is still learning how to protect me.

So my parents are following the advice of my medical team and asking everyone who meets me to help create a little “protective bubble” around me.

It isn't about keeping people away.
It's about keeping germs away.

Why can't I have kisses?

Because something that is harmless to a grown-up can sometimes be very serious for a newborn.

Babies, especially very young or premature babies, have immature immune systems. Their bodies are still developing the ability to fight infections that adults may cope with easily.

One particular concern: HSV

One of the biggest concerns is herpes simplex virus (HSV) — the virus that commonly causes cold sores.

A person can have HSV without realising it, and a cold sore can pass the virus to a baby through a kiss.

For a newborn, this can develop into neonatal herpes, which can be a serious and sometimes life-threatening infection.

You don't have to be sick to love me.
And you don't have to kiss me to show me you love me.

A smile, a cuddle, a gentle touch or simply being there means just as much.
